Mamey Sapote (2 Lb.)
$3.39/lb | Kapoho
Grown using organic practices at Kumu ʻĀina Farm in Kapoho.
Mamey Sapote is closely related to Chico Sapote, Eggfruit, and Abiu. Mamey is the largest of these, ranging from 1.5-over 3 lbs.
They are ripe when very soft, like an over-ripe avocado, with a thick, creamy texture, and in the center there's a medium-large size seed, also much like an avocado. The soft flesh is a gorgeous sunset/salmon color.
The ripe fruit is very sweet and can be eaten raw or cooked and has a fabulous flavor reminiscent of sweet almond, maraschino cherry, and pumpkin pie. The creamy texture makes for great smoothies, as well as perfectly smooth pie filling.
The ripe fruit can be stored for several days in the fridge and, if cut, should be wrapped tightly to preserve its freshness.
