Mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana, also known as the Queen of Fruits, has a thick, purple rind that covers the juicy, sweet, tart, wonderful little white, tangerine-shaped fruit inside.
Sometimes a yellow, waxy sap will be around parts of the edible, white fruit, which should be avoided because of it's very bitter, unpleasant taste.
Mangosteen are ripe when light plum to dark purple in color. The fresher fruits will have a rind that gives when squeezed, with minimal hard spots. Less fresh fruit will not have any give in the rind, although they still may be quite good.
