Spice, Mace - Whole (0.5 Oz.)
Gorgeous, whole, dried mace, ready to throw into your specialty dishes and cocktails. If you didn't already know, mace and nutmeg are from the same fruit and therefore, share a lot of similarities in their flavor and aroma. Nutmeg trees make golf-ball-sized, white fruits that split open when they're ripe, revealing bright red, lacey arils covering the seed inside. The red arils are mace, and the seed is the spice we know as nutmeg.
You can grind up this whole mace to use sparingly in a powdered form or throw it in whole for simmering dishes that call for other aromatic spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. Compared to nutmeg, its slightly more tart, lemony flavor lends well to fruity cocktails (and let's not overlook the fact that this wild-looking spice is screaming to be used as a garnish). Mace is used to highlight savory elements in many south Asian dishes (think tikkas and biryanis), whereas British recipes like to pair it with warm spices in sweet baked treats.
Grown in Kea'au by the Sylvesters.
