Kaulana Mahina
Hilo, Hawaiʻi
Haunani, born and raised in Puna, Hawaii, is a passionate advocate for Hawaiian language and culture. With four children attending a Hawaiian immersion school, she embarked on a journey to learn Hawaiian to support their education. This path led her to Ka Haka ʻUla ʻo Keʻelikōlani, the College of Hawaiian Language in Hilo, where she enrolled in a class about the mahina (moon) taught entirely in Hawaiian. Despite initial challenges, including language barriers and a steep learning curve, Haunani persevered, driven by her commitment to understand and retain the knowledge she gained.
Her efforts culminated in the creation of the Kaulana Mahina Hawaiian Moon Calendar, a project that combines her newfound understanding of the mahina with her dedication to the Hawaiian language. Through this work, she not only preserved valuable cultural knowledge but also transformed her personal journey into a broader mission. Guided by her kūpuna (ancestors), Haunani continues to share her experiences and insights, inspiring others to embrace and perpetuate Hawaiian traditions.
