Malama Mushrooms is a family-owned superfood mushroom company based in Kona, Hawaii, dedicated to sharing the health and wellness benefits of mushrooms with the world. It all started in 2015 when founder Benjamin Lillibridge grew his first Hawaiian mushrooms while living in a mango treehouse on a farm in Kona. Using an underground lava-formed cave as his first growing space, Ben combined his background in agriculture and environmental science with a newfound passion for mycology—the study of fungi. Today, the company has grown into a family and friend-powered operation, creating easy-to-use mushroom products designed to fit seamlessly into daily life while supporting overall health and well-being.

Ben’s fascination with fungi began when he learned about their incredible potential to benefit both people and the planet. From breaking down plastics to cleaning polluted soil and water, fungi offer powerful environmental solutions. On top of that, many of the world’s most important medicines, both traditional and modern, are derived from mushrooms. Inspired by these discoveries, Ben devoted himself to exploring mycology and sharing what he learned through Malama Mushrooms’ line of “fung-tional” products, which feature mushrooms like lion’s mane for cognition and nerve health, and reishi for stress and immunity support.

The mission doesn’t stop with products. Malama Mushrooms donates 5% of its profits to the Hawaii Fungi Project, a nonprofit Ben founded to study and preserve Hawaii’s native mushrooms, many of which face threats from climate change and invasive species. With only about 7% of the world’s fungi species currently identified, the possibilities for new discoveries are immense. By blending innovative mushroom products with a commitment to conservation and education, Malama Mushrooms embodies the spirit of aloha—caring for people and the planet in everything they do.
