ʻEleʻele, also known as Hinupuaʻa is an ancestral Hawaiian banana variety of the Maoli family. It's called ʻeleʻele (black) because of the dark coloration of it's pūmaiʻa stalk, which is utilized by lauhala for weavers for integrating dark patterns into their woven creations. Similarly, the name hinupuaʻa references the black of the stalk that looks like a puaʻa (pig) rubbed its grease (hinu) on it.
This maiʻa is one of the larger of the Hawaiian varieties and is good eaten raw when extra ripe, or cooked green and other various states of ripeness.
